AUSSIE tots are failing to grasp the basics of tooth brushing and are paying the price with decaying teeth.
Just a third of toddlers are brushing their teeth at the recommended rate of twice a day, new Australian Institute of Health and Welfare figures reveal.
The number of toddlers brushing less than once a day has doubled in just seven years.
The result is that half of Australia’s five and 12-year-olds have a “history of tooth decay” – in their “baby” and permanent teeth – according to a second AIHW report released today.
Australian Dental Association state president Matthew Hopcraft said the results were concerning, and warned that parents needed to encourage good dental habits at home from “the very first tooth”.
