It was probably only the second time in his career that he had allowed his cussed, plain-speaking character to be corrupted by vanity. The other occasion was the dental work to realign and whiten his teeth so that beaming smile, a fixture on the Tour since his first stage win in Chateuroux three years ago, replaced the untidy piano keyboard he hated in the mirror.
The gums became badly infected, and he recalled: “I almost passed out with the pain, then I was on antibiotics for 10 days and they wiped me out. I couldn’t eat and I was lying in bed for days. If I could turn back time, I would stick with my teeth.”
That smile will be worth all the pain if Cavendish lands Team GB’s first Olympic gold on home soil next summer.
And if he does, he might as well keep going to the top of the The Mall, through the gates of Buckingham Palace and wait for a tap on the shoulder with a ceremonial sword from Her Maj.
