Clicking jaw? You just need to wash your mouth out

A quarter of people will suffer from a painful, clicking jaw at some point — called temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Jeremy Quarrington, 50, a business travel consultant from Birchington, Kent, had a new procedure to treat it.

About 18 months ago, I noticed the right side of my jaw was making a clicking sound when I ate. It gradually got worse and was quite disconcerting. To me it sounded really loud, although no one else ever said they could hear it. The area was also painful, so I mentioned it at a routine dental appointment a few weeks later. My dentist did various tests and decided the noise was probably due to me clenching my teeth… cosmetic dentist london.. I don’t clench or grind my teeth, even at night, and I wasn’t stressed, which apparently is another cause of joint pain and clicking.

So, I decided to use the private medical insurance I have through work to get a second opinion…dental implants london

By the time I saw him the pain had worsened and it was harder to move my jaw. I’m rather partial to steak, but it was now too painful to eat. I could eat only soft foods such as soup and risotto and my GP prescribed strong painkillers to take the edge off.

He explained the jaw joint contains a disc made from cartilage which helps it move smoothly. But sometimes this disc moves out of position when the mouth is open. The disc had become inflamed, which explained the pain I was having. cosmetic dentist london The clicking sound was caused by the disc moving back into its position when my mouth closed.

Because this had been happening for a while, there had also been some wear and tear on the bone, and some of it had broken off and was floating around inside the jaw joint… dental implants london Leaving it untreated wasn’t an option as it was already painful and it was likely my jaw would eventually lock.

He said the best treatment for me would be a new procedure where they make a small incision just in front of the ear with a fine needle and insert a camera to see what’s going on, and then rinse the area with fluid to clear out the particles and tiny pieces of bone causing inflammation.

After the operation, there was some discomfort in my jaw, but painkillers got rid of it. I left hospital the next day and, five days later, had my long-awaited steak…

Occasionally, I might get a slight dull ache in that side of my jaw, but that’s all. I feel so lucky that such a simple operation has made such a big improvement… read more
