Cosmetic dentist tips Healthy gums lead to a beautiful smile!

Everyone wants a beautiful smile.  To keep your teeth healthy throughout your lifetime, you need to avoid periodontal (gum) disease. Your gums play an important role in oral hygiene and your general health.  iStock_000003578582SmallHealthy gums and bone firmly hold teeth in place.  Gums attach to teeth just below the edge of the gums. Gum disease affects the attachment between gums and teeth. Gum disease begins with plaque. Plaque is clear and sticky and contains bacteria. It forms on your teeth every day. It also forms where your teeth and your gums meet. If plaque is not removed every day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus). Unhealthy gums are weak and results in tooth loss.

Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems adults face, but gum disease can begin at any age. Gum disease often develops slowly and without causing any pain. Sometimes you may not notice any signs until the disease is serious and you are in danger of losing teeth. The good news is that gum disease can almost always be prevented.  If it starts, it can be treated and it can even be reversed in its early stages.

It is important to see a cosmetic dentist twice a year… During your visit, a dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth, effectively removing plaque with professional tools. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is important, but the level of cleaning a dental expert provides is critical. Your gums will also be checked for early signs of gum disease including redness, shininess, bleeding, soreness, bad breath and sensitivity.  A taste of metal in your mouth is also a sign of gum disease.  If gum disease is not treated, you can have gums that are always sore, red and puffy. Left untreated, a painful infection (abscess) in the area between your teeth and gums will develop and you will lose your teeth. No one wants that to happen, so make dentist visits a priority.

…White teeth can transform your appearance and dramatically increase your confidence. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular visits to your dentist will help you maintain a healthy mouth throughout your lifetime.
