PRF Therapy

Platelet Rich Fibrin Therapy

At London Smile Care we are proud to use the latest techniques delivering the best to our patients.

One of the latest techniques we are introducing is the Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)

What is PRF or Platelet Rich Fibrin?

The concept of PRF is based on collecting patient’s blood as for any routine medical test. The blood is placed in a special centrifugation machine. At the end of the spin the blood is separated into 3 layers:

  • A clear liquid or plasma layer
  • A yellow jelly-like clot containing the majority of the platelets, white blood cells and bone growth factors is obtained.
  • A rich layer in red blood cells

PRF is a 100% natural product of our body with no additives.

Why do we recommend PRF?

The jawbone has very little blood supply compared to other tissues in the human body. In areas where there is less blood, the body has less ability to heal quickly and less defence against infection. PRF provide immediate introductions of the body growth and healing factors .

Clinical Application Of PRF

Post-Tooth Extraction

Normally, when a tooth is extracted the resultant socket is left open to heal. This socket is exposed to bacterial, saliva and food debris that can delay healing and sometimes result in a very painful condition called dry socket. The use of PRF provide an injection of white blood cells and growth factors for accelerated healing. In addition, the PRF membrane provides a protective cover to the extraction socket or the wound area.

PRF can be mixed with bone graft for socket preservation procedure. This would help creating more bone in the socket for future dental implant.

Dental Implant Surgery:

In sites where implants are placed, PRF occupies the space between the extraction site and the dental implant. Placement of PRF in dental implant sites speed the implant healing time and reduces the chance for dental implant failure. PRF also improves the strength of bone osseointegration to implants.

This is particularly important in sinus lift surgery with bone graft and gum graft. The healing time in those cases reduced significantly and less post-operative complications including less pain, swelling and bruising is reported.

This video show how bone graft with sinus lift key hole surgery work:

In summary PRF accelerates the healing process, decreases surgical pain and swelling for dental implants and Tooth Removal, decreased Chance of Dry Socket and Bone Pathology after Tooth Extractions.
