Sinus Lift

It must be observed that sinus cavity size varies among individuals, and that it tends to increase in size with age.

A sinus lift is performed to return the level of the sinus floor to a height that will be adequate for implant placement. It is a tested intervention that has been very often applied and that accompanies the broad success of dental implants. Naturally, only a careful planning by the specialist, Dr Daoudi, can avoid complications or risks.

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. In selective cases, sedation can be administered.

The procedure involves gum incisions in the back upper jaw. Once the sinus is entered, the sinus membrane will be “lifted” carefully intact and the bone graft (either bone substitute and/or autogenous, your own bone) is placed to create a new sinus floor. Stitches will then be used to secure the gum tissue and care must be taken to allow for healing.

After the inserted material has become solid or ready, a second procedure will be needed to insert the implants since the treated area is fully coherent. This usually takes place few months later.

In some cases it is possible to insert the implants directly during the sinus lift. Only Dr Daoudi as dental specialist, however, can take this decision.

Dr Daoudi also apply a special sinus lift technique using internal sinus lift technique. This is more like a key hole surgery allowing accessing the sinus after preparing a small key hole access. The maxillary sinus membrane can then be lifted using special instrument and pushing technique. This would allow the placement of the bone graft material and the dental implant simultaneously. It is much more conservative procedure with quicker recovery time. This technique can be applied in selective cases of maxillary sinus lift procedure with tooth implant surgery.

After the procedure

It is normal to expect a degree of discomfort, swelling and bruising of the operated area. Usually, a group of medications (pain killers, antibiotics, steroids and an anti-microbe mouth wash) are prescribed to reduce the possibility of postoperative discomfort and /or complications.

Usually a review visit(s) is needed to verify the healing of the area before implant placement.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to discuss them with Dr Daoudi, our dental specialist.
