Dentists seek teeth whitening regulations

The Irish Dental Association has expressed concern about the health risks that are associated with unsupervised tooth whitening.

It says there is a lack of regulation and products with very high strengths, some of which are available online, should be prohibited.

Fintan Hourihan, chief executive of the IDA, said the organisation had written to the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly seeking his support for a proposed new EU directive to regulate the sector.

Under the proposals, products with 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide would continue to be freely available.

Products with 0.1% to 6% would be first used under the supervision of a dentist and thereafter by prescription, while products above 6% would be banned.
