Is Dental Implants A Good Option For Teenagers?

By June 29, 2020 No Comments

Losing a tooth can be traumatic at any age but this can leave you with a challenge on how best to replace the missing tooth.

It is well known that dental implants London provide the best option to replace missing teeth in adults. Tooth implant can provide almost like for like replacement. This allow restoring lost function like chewing food and speech. Furthermore, dental implant provides reliable long-term tooth with excellent dental cosmetic results.

But does dental implant work for teenagers and children?

At London Smile Care we recommend for children and young teenagers to consider other tooth replacement options. This can be in the form of a cosmetic removable denture or stick-on bridge (Dental Maryland Bridge). Both of the above options are conservative and cost-effective options. They do not cause any harm to the adjacent teeth as they do not involve any teeth cutting till total jaw development is achieved. This is particularly the case with the upper jaw where this may be achieved at the early 20s.

As a result the best age for dental implants placement is about 20 for young male and 21 for female

When the jaw grow it move as a one unit allowing the jawbone, the teeth and gum to grow in the same direction.

While teeth are anchored to the jawbone with the periodontal ligament allowing them to move with jaw growth. Dental implants on the other hand are securely anchored directly to the jawbone. This does not allow any movement of the implant part of the jaw to follow the natural growth pattern.

Another problem of losing a permeant tooth at young age due to extraction or simply congenital missing is the lack of jawbone development in that region of the jaw. This can result in a challenge for placing the dental implant needing a bone graft and occasionally gum graft procedure

We always recommend that you discuss your case with our specialist as early as possible to help planning for future tooth replacement. On many occasions we work with other specialists like orthodontist to create the needed space to replace the missing tooth.

Please feel free to contact us with any question about any of the issue discussed in this blog
