Good oral health begins with establishing good habits early, say dentists.
Even before babies cut their first teeth, they should have their gums cleaned, says Vancouver dentist Dr. Sam Winter.
“Brush infants’ gums to get them used to it,” he advises. “Brush any teeth as soon as you can see them. If you’re not comfortable using a toothbrush on the gums, at least clean them off with a cloth, especially after the baby has had a drink of milk or juice. And don’t ever put a baby to bed with a bottle in its mouth if the bottle has anything other than water in it.”
He says as saliva slows down when the child is sleeping, the teeth are not being rinsed and a coating of milk or juice “will really rot the teeth.”
