A DENTIST has been struck off the NHS list after repeatedly failing to apologise to a patient.
Rajesh Narendranath, from the Stone Family Dental Practice, has been told he will no longer be able to treat NHS patients after a damning report labelled him “cold, calculating and blunt”. Best implant dentist london
Mr Narendranath was investigated by the Health Service Ombudsman following an incident in 2007.
A woman, who the ombudsman identified as Mrs D, claimed Mr Narendranath, known as Mr Nath, was “rude and unprofessional” and hurt her during an x-ray. The investigation led to the South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust removing him from its performers’ list last year. Best cosmetic dentist london
However Mr Nath, who had previously worked at Hanley Health Centre, appealed the decision and took the PCT to a Care Standards Tribunal. But the body backed the PCT and stated the dentist’s attitude “poses a clear risk to the public interest”.
The tribunal heard Mrs D, a cancer patient and multiple sclerosis sufferer, registered at Mr Nath’s practice in 2007.affordable cosmetic dentistry london
During an initial appointment, the patient asked for a scale and polish because her mouth had suffered during chemotherapy, but Mr Nath refused.
After continuing to suffer pain, Mr Nath told her there was nothing he could do as he could not identify the source of pain.
He later opted to carry out an x-ray, during which the patient alleged he deliberately hurt her mouth.affordable dental implants london
The tribunal report stated Mr Nath “angrily” asked her to leave and said he would no longer treat her.
After being told of the complaint against him, Mr Nath wrote a letter of response to officials where he said: “She has complained about me to the PCT! The Health Care Commission was called in to carry out an independent review following the patient’s complaint.
In 2008, Mr Nath wrote to the patient asking for an apology from her. The patient subsequently contacted the commission claiming his “practices, procedures and attitudes did not respect her vulnerability”. Last year Health Service ombudsman Ann Abraham took the unprecedented step of publicly naming the dentist.
At the time, Ms Abraham said she hoped her decision to name him would prompt the dentist to issue a “long overdue” apology to the woman.
In July 2011 – four years after the complaint – Mr Nath wrote a letter of apology. He also went on to attend courses geared towards improving his ability to handle complaints. A petition was also set up by patients at his Radford Street practice in support of Mr Nath.
But the tribunal backed the PCT in removing him from its list. A spokesman for South Staffordshire PCT confirmed it is in talks with Mr Nath to establish the number of NHS patients that are currently on his books.
It will then seek to help individuals transfer that number to nearby practices…read more
