A friend who is a personal-finance guru was recently stumped by a money question of his own: What is the going rate for the tooth fairy?
His daughter had just lost her first tooth and he didn’t know what the dental deity should leave her. He posted his query online and tips and quips came in fast, with amounts ranging from 25 cents to $20 or whatever cash the parents happened to have on hand that night. Some people suggested giving more for that special first tooth and less thereafter; others recommended giving golden dollar coins because they look like treasure.
