TOOTH DECAY BACK ON HEALTH AGENDA

EXTRA cash is being ploughed into dental care for children in a bid to tackle high rates of tooth decay in Barrow and South Lakeland. Primary care trust NHS Cumbria has secured £1.5m in funding from the Department of Health to give youngsters who have not seen a dentist in two years access to oral health advice and treatment.

The money will be spent increasing the number of NHS dental places with existing dentists in Cumbria, for patients who are known to have been waiting to see a dentist for a significant length of time.

Work will also take place to ensure that all the children waiting to access NHS dentistry are placed with a surgery.dental implants london Public health bosses hope it will alleviate the growing problem of tooth decay in young people in Furness and South Lakes.

In July last year, the Evening Mail revealed youngsters living in both districts had the worst rates of tooth decay in the country. Figures from the Department of Health showed the rate of children’s tooth decay sat at the bottom of national tables. The average number of decayed, missing or filled teeth in 12-year-olds was 1.6, compared with a national average of 0.8 per cent, while other areas of Cumbria were level with, or below, the national average.

Eric Rooney, consultant in dental public health for NHS Cumbria, said: “It’s great news that we’ve been successful in bidding for this money and it will help us ensure that those waiting the longest with no access to dentistry are placed with an NHS dentist.cosmetic dentist london

“This fund will also help us improve the dental hygiene of children across the county by helping them get on the right foot and into good habits around cleaning and looking after their teeth.

“Dental and oral health is a vital part of looking after ourselves and it’s important that we all need to take this seriously. The best way people can look after their teeth and gums is by brushing our teeth regularly using a fluoride toothpaste as well as regular visits to the dentist.”cosmetic dentist london

The PCT says it operates a database which ensures people waiting the longest in specific areas are first to be allocated when spaces become available.dental implants londonread more
