Trip to dentist can reduce risk of heart attack: research

A professional clean from the dentist can leave patients with more than sparking teeth – it can reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, new research has found.

A new study of 100,000 people found those who had their teeth scraped and cleaned by a cosmetic dentist London had a 24 per cent lower risk of a heart attack and a 13 per cent lower risk of a stroke in the seven years following the appointment.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association Scientific meeting.

Dr Emily Chen, cardiology fellow at the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, said: “Protection from heart disease and stroke was more pronounced in participants who got tooth scaling at least once a year.”

The study included more than 51,000 adults who had received at least one full or partial tooth scaling and a similar number of people matched with gender and health conditions who had no tooth scaling.

Professional tooth scaling appears to reduce inflammation-causing bacterial growth that can lead to heart disease or stroke, she said.

In a separate study, researchers found dental health was linked to heart attacks, congestive heart failure and stroke in different ways….Also those with few teeth were two and half times more likely to have heart failure than those with the most teeth and gum bleeding was linked to a doubling in the risk of a stroke…dental implants London…“Gum disease has been linked to many diseases and illnesses within the body, an increased likelihood of suffering a heart attack being one of them…

“Other systemic links that have been associated with gum disease include strokes, diabetes, preterm births and dementia.”

Natasha Stewart, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “It’s already known that poor oral hygiene may be associated with more well known risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking and poor diet.

“So it’s important to make sure that good personal hygiene forms a basic part of a healthy lifestyle.

“Keeping your teeth clean and visiting the cosmetic dentist London is important but if you really want to help look after your heart, make sure you eat a balanced diet, avoid smoking and take part in regular physical activity .”…read more
