Teeth grinding / clenching or bruxism is a habit that becomes more epidemic in modern life style.
But what’s the effect of teeth grinding
The bruxism habit mostly takes place night time while sleep. However, it is not uncommon for some to grind teeth during the day as well.
There are many manifestations to this habit example headache, neck and should pain and TMJ clicking…etc
On may occasions your TMJ dentist will be the one who will identify this problem.
As a routine, at London Smile Care we conduct through clinical examination for all of our patients including cancer screen, cosmetic dental assessment and TMJ assessment.
Some of the dental presentation of bruxism are:
Flaking of the enamel, wear facets … although in more serious cases the “cusps” at the corners of molars may snap off, or they may be a total fracture of a tooth leading to its extraction and possible need for dental implants.
On many occasions with patients who grind their teeth, the sleeping partners are the first to discover the activity. It is not a pleasant thing to be woken by.
The true cause of teeth clenching or teeth grinding habit is not yet fully understood. There are many theories including:
- Anxiety, stress and life changing events including working long hours.
- Bite imbalance
- Jaw shape and position
- Muscular problems
- TMD Temporo Mandibular Joint Dysfunction, a group of conditions related to bruxism
How best to manage teeth grinding / teeth clenching?
One of the easiest and most efficient method to manage this problem by your TMJ dentist is to have a bite guard or gum shield.
This can take different shape and design including soft bite guard or hard one that can fit the upper or lower teeth.
Dr Daoudi, specialist dentist is the best to advise on the best night guard for your individual case.
