Pop Quiz on London Trivia

As a London dental practice, we’re curious to find out how much trivia our patients know about the city! How many of these are news to you?

1. London is home to six orchestras: The Royal Philharmonic, The London Philharmonic, The BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
2. More than half of the Underground actually runs above ground. This is because when they were first built in the mid-1800s, they needed to be close to the surface to vent steam of the original steam trains.
3. Before the city decided to build the Underground with trains, they considered using underground rivers with commuter barges.
4. At close to 9 million, the population of Greater London exceeds the entire population of Austria. (And twice as many more people come to visit every year.)
5. The Shard, the city’s tallest building, is made of 11,000 panels of glass.
6. This is one of the most diverse cities in the world, with residents speaking over 300 languages.
7. People have been living on the spot where the city is located since 4000 BC, but it has been the UK’s largest city since the 1600s, long before it was the UK!
8. The Great Fire in 1666 destroyed more than 13,000 houses, 80 churches, and made 100,000 Londoners homeless in the course of four days.
9. The smell of the city got so bad by 1858 that laws were passed to ban butchering animals within the city and dumping sewage into the Thames.
10. The Tower Bridge once opened with a bus still on it. The driver sped up and succeeded in jumping the bus over a 10-foot gap. He was rewarded with a day off.

Our practice is located in Marylebone in the City of Westminster within Greater London, just a short walk from Madame Tussauds and Queen Mary’s Garden, which are two places definitely worth a visit! Madame Tussauds is full of lifelike wax figures of all kinds of famous people, from the royal family to popular musicians to Marvel superheroes. The best time to see the gardens is probably during the first two weeks of June, when the most flowers are in bloom.
